Saugus High Observes Disability Month

What do Einstein, Cher, and Tom Cruise have in common?

[view:node_ad=5]Did you know that 99 percent of Americans will be officially labeled “disabled” by a doctor before they die?

Did you also know that people with disabilities are four to ten times more likely to be assaulted, robbed, or sexually attacked than people who are not disabled?

Saugus High will be observing Disability Awareness Month in October. Career Transitions Advisor Louise Willard will be presenting lessons October 9, 2007, explaining disabilities — both visible and invisible — and how they affect people differently.

She will also stress that students should learn to separate people from their disabilities so accomplishments are recognized without an inappropriate focus on the disability. One example she likes to use is that of Christopher Reeves, who reinvented his life in an entirely new genre after becoming a quadriplegic.
