Saugus Union School District officials have a bond measure on the agenda among its “future items,” however, officials are not expecting to closely look at a bond measure until next year, officials said Monday.

“(The bond measure) will be on the agenda, but it’s not coming up between now and December,” said Saugus Union Superintendent Joan Lucid.

District officials plan to look at need and community input before a more detailed discussion takes place, she said.

The bond amount and needs addressed by a potential bond are “all part of the consideration that needs to have more conversation about it,” Lucid added.

The Saugus Union School District would be the fourth school district to seek a bond measure in recent years.

A facilities needs analysis was approved in October, which would be part of the consideration involved in any bond measure discussion, Lucid said.

“There’s the modernization, there’s bringing everything up to code; we’ve got the old portable thats are already to be removed,” said Lucid, explaining some of the past needs that have been discussed by district officials. “That would be a priority as we go into the new calendar year.”

There are also costs associated with the Common Core Standards Initiative, which is requiring most school districts to upgrade their wireless networks to address the needs associated with the new state-mandated, technology-integrated curriculum.

The district has 545 classrooms of which 175 are relocatables, approximately 32 percent of the classrooms, according to the facilities needs plan.

About 165 of the 175 relocatable classrooms will reach the end of their lifecycle by 2020.

Last week, the Newhall School District recently put the second part of $60 million voter-approved Measure E bond notes on the market to pay for facility upgrades.

In November 2012, the Castaic Union School District received an OK from voters for Measure QS, which authorized the district to borrow $51 million.

The Sulphur Springs School District has already implemented several million dollars in upgrades from its $72 million Measure CK, which passed in 2011.

In November 2008, voters approved a $300 million school facilities general obligation bond for the construction of new school facilities in the Hart district, namely Castaic High School and districtwide upgrades.

The Saugus Union School District encompasses approximately 94 square miles of land, most of which is on the west side of the Santa Clarita Valley.

The district operates 15 elementary schools, and its 2013-14 enrollment is approximately 10,100 students.
