A Saugus High School student has a new set of wheels following a raffle held Monday night.

Saugus High School sophomore Townsend Kaneversky was one of thousands of Hart School District students entered into a raffle for a shot at winning a 2012 Nissan Versa courtesy of Nissan of Valencia.

Students had to meet a few criteria before they could get their hopes up for the car. They had to have 97 percent (or higher) attendance, hold down a 2.0 GPA and have no out-of-school suspensions or expulsions during their high school years.

Along with the car, Nissan of Valencia offered the students other valuable prizes, including gift cards to Target, Best Buy, Regal Movies and other local venues.

“It’s exciting,” Kaneversky said, “I’ve never had a car before.”

The Saugus High School student first learned of the giveaway on the Saugus News Network, the school’s morning closed circuit television program.

“They really encouraged people to come tonight and join and sign up,” he said.

An hour before the event, Kaneversky had hoped to go home with another prize, but set his hopes on the car.

He was shocked when they called his name.

“I froze up for a second and then my friends said ‘It’s you!’, and I said ‘Whoa!’,” the teenager said with a smile.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” he said.

Four students’ names were pulled for the final drawing – all four were given keys to the Nissan, but only one worked – Kanaversky’s. The other three students are getting $1,000 each from Nissan of Valencia.

Nissan of Valencia also awarded $1,000 to Hart High’s drumline for winning the competition held that night, as well as $500 to Valencia, Golden Valley and Canyon High Schools, who also performed.

“I love doing it,” said Nissan of Valencia General Manager Daniel Sterkel, “I love giving back to the community.”

Sterkel’s ultimate goal with the event was to bring awareness to Nissan of Valencia’s community efforts.

“It exceeded my expectations,” he said.

Kaneversky hopes to get his license soon.
