Saugus, West Ranch Among Aca-Deca Super Competitors

lacoe_logo-150The 2012 Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon (LACAD) for high schoolers will conclude its competition on Saturday, Feb. 4 at USC with the fast-paced, mind-racking, game show-style Super Quiz before an audience of fans, friends and family.

Teams from Saugus High and West Ranch High are among the competitors.

The Super Quiz, which features The Age of Empire as the study theme,  caps the two-day, 10-event LACAD for 45 public high schools from throughout L.A. County, including teams from Saugus, Stevenson Ranch, Alhambra, Arcadia, Beverly Hills, Burbank, El Monte, Glendora, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lancaster, Long Beach, Montebello, Norwalk, Pasadena, Pico Rivera and Torrance.

The competition will be held roughly between 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. (start and end times are approximate) Saturday in the  USC Galen Center (2nd Floor Athletic Courts), Jefferson Blvd. at Figueroa Street, LA 90089

The LACAD, one of the largest and most competitive “Aca Deca” contests in the state, is organized by the Downey-based Los Angeles County Office of Education. The LACAD is separate from the Aca Deca competition presented by the Los Angeles Unified School District, which holds its Super Quiz the same day at the Roybal Learning Center.

Results of the LACAD Super Quiz (Top 10 teams) will be announced shortly after the event’s conclusion. Although it accounts for only about 5 percent of a team’s total score, the Super Quiz, the only public portion of the competition, is traditionally a strong indicator of how well squads are performing overall.

The Super Quiz results will be unofficial pending the announcement of all final and total       team and individual results at the LACAD Awards Luncheon, which will be held at noon Thursday, February 9 at the Quiet Cannon Country Club, 901 N. Via San Clemente, Montebello 90640.

The winning team at LACAD along with top-scoring squad(s) that qualify as “wild card” entrants advance to the California Academic Decathlon on March 15-18 in Sacramento.

The winning team at state goes to the U.S. Academic Decathlon taking place April 25-28 in Albuquerque, NM.
