Scholarship Fundraiser To Honor Fallen Army Paratrooper

geligarmyThe inaugural Ian Gelig Memorial Scholarship fundraiser will be held Sunday afternoon at the American Legion Post 507 in Newhall and everyone is invited to participate.

The scholarship was established to honor fallen Army Paratrooper Sergeant Ian T.D. Gelig, who was killed in Afghanistan in March of 2010.

Launched by the SCV Chamber of Commerce in May, the scholarship program is focused on those who are attending or plan on attending an accredited institute of higher education in the Southern California area.

It is designed to honor all SCV veterans by providing financial support to veterans and immediate family members who are pursuing higher education.

The barbecue will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. and will feature pork ribs, chicken, 5 cheese macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and more. There will also be a silent auction, raffle prizes and a special presentation at halftime of the second round of NFL games at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children, age 18 and under; tickets include all you can eat lunch and two drink tickets. The Newhall American Legion Post 507 is located at 24527 Spruce Street in Newhall: adjacent to the Newhall Library construction.
