Fitness Demonstration Kicks Off New PE Curriculum, Fund Drive.

Students at Sierra Vista Junior High School demonstrated the school’s new Fitness Center equipment in a fitness open house this morning. The day-long event kicks off the school’s fundraising drive, with a goal of $50,000 to complete the center.

During today's physical education classes, students will demonstrate the new equipment the school hopes to purchase with the proceeds of its fund-raising campaign. Last year the school brought in more than $20,000, which purchased the climbing wall, stationery bicycles, weight machines and other fitness equipment available for student use in class and before and after school on a voluntary basis.

Interactive fitness equipment which the school plans to add include Dance Dance Revolution platforms with television monitors, XaviX interactive fitness program with TV monitors, V-Cycling Virtual Reality Theatre with TV monitors, and a computerized fitness lab with heart rate monitors and a fitness assessment system.

Sierra Vista’s Associated Student Body (ASB) is conducting a two-pronged campaign to complete the center.

Parents and businesses are being asked to become Fitness Center sponsors with sponsorship donations of $50, $200, $250, $500 or more.

Students and their families also can participate in a prize drawing with proceeds going to the Fitness Center.

“Physical education at Sierra Vista has changed forever,” commented George Velarde, chair of the school’s PE Department and the motivating force behind the Fitness Center. “By adding technology to the curriculum, teachers will be able to individualize physical education according to the student’s health and fitness level…to create a total health portfolio.”

He noted that students who once tried to avoid physical education classes are now clamoring to use the new Fitness Center equipment in their free time.

Thanks to the initial fund-raising effort last year, Sierra Vista’s old gym now has a 10-foot by 52-foot rock climbing wall, 17 circuit training resistance machines, four spin bikes and the HopSports Exercise Training System.

Space for the Fitness Center became available when the smaller gym was replaced by a full-size gymnasium on the Sierra Vista campus which is shared by the school, SCV Boys & Girls Club and City of Santa Clarita sports programs.

The fund-raising campaign will culminate in a Fitness Expo on campus March 28.
