Children who have lost their homes in the recent Southern California fires will get comfort in more ways than one

[view:node_ad=5]Kristin Peterson, and her son Kevin, who attends Esperanza Elementary in Palmdale, have spearheaded an idea that will help children affected by the fires recover.  After hearing the fires had destroyed some houses, Kevin couldn’t help of thinking of the children that had lost their homes, blankets, and teddy bears.

Both wanted to help somehow, and the idea came to them while they were out shopping.  “We went to JoAnn’s and as we were looking around, we saw a make-a-blanket kit, and we thought ‘what a great idea…we could have the kids at school make blankets for the families’,” says Peterson.

After getting approval from school officials, Peterson coordinated sending a letter to Esperanza parents asking for help.

Peterson had expected a decent turn-out of 20-30 blankets, but her expectation was underestimated.   “Thousands of dollars has come in, and twenty-five classes, with seven hundred students, have participated in making the blankets.  And now, we’re going to get these blankets to these kids.”

But that’s easier said than done.  All the shelters have been closed, and those who have lost their home, have probably moved into rentals, or with family.  Despite the difficulty, Peterson hasn’t let that stop her.  “I’ve been working with Fran Stewart from the Red Cross to find these kids, because they’re out there, and while we respect their privacy, we really want to get these blankets to them.”

The SCV Disaster Coalition is also on the list of organizations Peterson is talking to.
