Schools throughout the nation took part in the 13^th annual Read Across America Day on Tuesday, with many local schools welcoming community leaders to help participate.

Read Across America Day is sponsored by the National Education Association and generally falls on the birthday of Dr. Seuss.  It is designed to encourage and motivate children of all ages to read.

Many schools embraced the late Dr. Seuss’ birthday and celebrated with readings of his famed children’s books.

KHTS Station Owner Carl Goldman visited Fair Oaks Ranch Community School where he read Dr. Seuss’ “Horton Hears A Who” to Mr. Newton’s 6^th grade class.

“This is a great way to connect kids with community leaders,” said Goldman.  “It brings me back to my childhood; I remember reading this book when I was a kid.”

Other community leaders from the Santa Clarita Valley were also at the school, including Sheriff’s Deputy Atrie Thompson and Signal Senior Columnist Michele Buttelman.

Janice Murray, Director of Community Relations for KHTS, went to Sulphur Springs Elementary school where she read to three different classes.

Local community leaders join a list of leaders throughout the nation who read to children, including First Lady Michelle Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan.
