Scott Wilk Meets Youngest California Elector

Royal High School Senior and Simi Valley resident Christopher Tumbeiro was selected to be the youngest member of the California Electoral College and was one of 55 that cast votes for President Barack Obama on Monday afternoon.

Tumbeiro had the opportunity to meet with Assemblyman Scott Wilk’s Capitol office staff on Monday before the election. He and his American Government Teacher Brian Dennert, also spoke with Wilk about his experience casting his vote.

At 18 years old, Christopher Tumbeiro was the youngest member and only high school student of the state’s Electoral College delegation. Dr. Lee Rogers, who ran against Buck McKeon in the recent election, contacted Royal High School and asked them to select an elector who was a registered voter and at least 18 years old.

Not only did Tumbeiro meet the basic requirements, but Dennert also mentioned, “Chris has been in my class for a couple years, a couple different classes, and I knew that he was hard-working and he had good character, so I chose him to represent him in our electoral college.”

“The Electoral College is a historic tradition in our Republican form of government and I’m glad Chris was selected to play a role on the process,” Wilk said. “He is an outstanding young man and I congratulated him on being part of history and encouraged him to pursue his passions in life.”

Asked about his future plans Tumbeiro remarked, “I have an interest in law and I’m hoping to get into politics later in life.”

For someone interested in government, even a brief stint as a member of the electoral college was an invaluable experience, as Dennert noted, “We got to go to Sacramento, meet with elected officials from both parties and their staff and tour the capital. And they kind of demystified the process, because while we were there, we saw how it really worked.”
