Bridgeport Marketplace unveils artsy sculpture design.
Renowned artist Douwe Blumberg was busy Tuesday working on his newest creation, a sculpture called “Birds of Valencia,” which depicts birds in flight above a manmade lake that will adorn the corner of the Bridgeport Marketplace.
The shopping center is currently under construction with opening scheduled for June. It will sit on the corner of Newhall Ranch Road and McBean Parkway.
In all, sixty sculpted birds will comprise the piece of art, with the birds serving as the sole structural support. “The idea is to create a flying flock of birds, entirely self supporting. Like a real flight, it must convey a powerful sense of grace, movement and flow as it rises into the air,” Blumberg said in a statement.
The birds were crafted from a cast aircraft aluminum alloy.
Douwe Blumberg is also known for being a finalist in the search for artwork to be placed at the post 9/11 ground zero site.
