SCV Chamber Hispanic Committee Prepares For Gala

4th annual “Exelencia Gala” set for September 7th

[view:node_ad=5]The Hispanic Business Committee (HBC) of the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce has announced plans for the 4th annual Excelencia Gala.   The event will be held on Friday, September 7th, 6:00 pm at the Hyatt Valencia.  This year the theme is “Pearls of Wisdom”. Congresswoman Hilda Solis will be offering her “Pearls of Wisdom” during the keynote address.

The event recognizes leaders in the business community along with the scholarship recipients. Event Sponsor, Chiquita Canyon Land Fill, is supporting the HBC with its scholarship efforts.

Gala Event Chair, Kathleen Sturkey, promises an even greater event this year.  Awards will be given to businesses in the following categories:

Avance Award-Hispanic Business (nominees, Spanish Made Friendly, Lucas Club, Mojitos, North Star Dimensions);

Amistad Award-Community Leader/Individual and Organization (nominees, Richard Cardenas, Michael Cruz, Cynthia Llerenas, Centro De Amor, Children’s Dental Health Foundation);

Adelante Award-Corporate Partner (nominees, Edison, Mission Valley Bank, Newhall Land & Farming Co., Vons Grocery Co.,);

 Diverisdad Award-Diversity Award (nominees, Girl Scouts Joshua Tree Council, Sam's Club, Stay Green)

This is the third year the HBC has awarded scholarships to students in the Santa Clarita Valley. Dora Zavala, 2007 Chair of the Hispanic Business Committee remarked, “The key goal of the committee is to help Hispanic students further their education”. “We are so passionate about this, the drive and dedication from the committee is outstanding,” adds Zavala. As a result of their work, they have increased scholarship funds by 115% from last year.

This year the HBC awarded six (6) scholarships in the amount $1,000 to one student from each of the following schools: Valencia High-Natasha Reyes, Saugus High-Laura Medina, Hart High- Jaci Casillas-Brown, Canyon High-Jesse Rivera, Bowman-Irving Figueroa and Golden Valley- Daniel Montes.

This year they added two (2) scholarships for $500 to one student from The Learning Post; Denise Castellanos, and one called The HBC Inspiration Award to Ana Herrera from Hart High School.
