Firefighters quickly extinguished a car fire that spread to the brush along the 5 freeway in Newhall Saturday night, Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said.

Officials received the initial call at 10:20 p.m., said Supervising Fire Dispatcher Michael Pittman.

“Units reported a quarter acre of light grass at the northbound 5 right where it transitions to the 14,” said Pittman.

The fire, near the 5/14 split, was quickly contained by firefighters.

California Highway Patrol officers diverted traffic away from firefighting efforts, stopping traffic for approximately one hour. Officials on scene said the car appeared to be stripped of components, and may have been a stolen vehicle.

CHP and fire investigators are handling the investigation.
