A brush fire burning in Newhall Monday is burning several homes in the area, according to witnesses on scene.

6:20 p.m. – The Railroad Fire is now at 50 percent containment, according to LA County Fire Department officials. The fire began two hours ago on a hillside near Valle Del Oro, prompting a third alarm brush response from firefighters.
At least one building has been damaged by the flames.
6:10 p.m. – Forward progress on the Railroad Fire has been stopped, holding at 15 acres, with 40 percent containment according to the latest estimates by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is unclear at this time how many structures have been damaged.
5:50 p.m. – The Railroad Fire has burned at least three structures in the Terrace Apartment complex. It has grown to 10 acres since it began at 4:20 p.m. Traffic on Sierra Highway is backed up for several miles near the burn area as residents attempt to leave the area en mass.
The rightmost lane on the northbound 14 freeway is blocked north of Placerita Canyon Road. Northbound traffic is backed up to the 5/14 split, with an estimated 22 minute delay.
No Metrolink trains on the Antelope Valley line will stop at the Newhall station until further notice due to the fire, according to Metrolink officials.

5:30 p.m. – The Railroad Fire has reached 10 acres, with three structures impacted and zero percent containment, according to the city of Santa Clarita’s social media.
5:20 p.m. – Santa Clarita Sheriff’s have released a list of road closures on social media. Newhall Avenue, between Sierra Highway and Railroad Avenue, has been closed, along with Dockweiler Drive at Sierra Highway.
An evacuation center has been set up Golden Valley High School, located at 27051 Robert C Lee Pkwy.
5:10 p.m. – Firefighters are battling 95 degree temperatures with 10 mph winds. The #RailroadFire is threatening the Terrace Apartments in Newhall as firefighters work to contain the blaze.

4:55 p.m. – Bottletree Lane is being evacauted according to a KHTS reporter on scene. Residents on that street or in the area are encouraged to pack up any important documents and medications, and to listen to all emergency responder’ directions.
The Railroad Fire has grown to 5 acres, according to fire officials.
4:37 p.m. – Multiple structures are on fire, according to a KHTS reporter at the scene. The Railroad Fire, as first responders are now calling it, is running uphill according to Los Angeles County Fire Department officials.
A third alarm brush response has been called for the fire.

Original – The fire was reported in the 20000 block of Via Estrella, near the intersection of Newhall Avenue and Valle Del Oro, around 4:20 p.m. Monday.
The hillside behind the apartments is on fire, according to a representative from the Los Angeles County Fire Department
Smoke is showing from the fire from up to two miles away.
