Lake Hughes Fire Knocked Down, Firefighters Prevent Hotspots Overnight (VIDEO)

A brush fire off the northbound Interstate 5, just north of Lake Hughes Road burned 25 acres before being stopped, fire officials said.

3 p.m.: Fire officials confirmed after units stayed on scene to mop up the remains of the fire and prevent hotspots overnight that the fire reached approximately 25 acres before being stopped.

The fire is now 95 percent contained, according to a tweet by Cal Fire early Sunday afternoon.

6:25 p.m. Fire officials reported that forward progress has been stopped on the Lake Hughes Fire. No structures were lost, but three firefighters sustained minor injuries.

The fire burned more than 25 acres before it was under control Saturday night, according to Fire Department officials.

The injuries were reportedly related to heat exhaustion for two of the firefighters; one of the firefighters sustained a shoulder injury, according to fire officials.

All lanes of Interstate 5 on the southbound side are open, but the northbound lanes still have a SIGAlert in effect.

6:15 p.m.: Fire officials confirmed the blaze has reached 30 percent containment Saturday evening.

One lane of traffic has opened on the southbound side of the I-5. While the #1 lane is now allowing traffic to pass, the #2, 3 and 4 lanes are all still closed.

6:05 p.m. There’s no update yet on the total acres burned or containment, but fixed wing aircraft air being released from assistance, which is a sign the containment is improving.

5:45 p.m.: The fire has grown to 25 acres, and is now 10 percent contained, fire officials said.

Up to three firefighters have bee injured while fighting the fire. Two additional firefighters are being looked over by medical personnel, in addition to the one hurt earlier.

5:25 p.m.: Officials with he National Weather Service confirmed 5-10 MPH winds near Lake Hughes Rd. with gusts up to 20 MPH spurring on the flames. Temperatures are between 92 and 94 degrees. Humidity is about 30% as of 5:25 p.m.

5:15 p.m.: The fire has spread to at least 20 acres, according to fire officials.

The southbound 5 freeway has been shut down completely while firefighters battle the blaze.

5:11 p.m. The scope of the fast-moving fire is still being assessed by fire officials, who are being assisted by numerous aerial units.

5:08 p.m. Fire officials confirmed one firefighters has been injured, the severity of the injury is not known at this time. SoCal Edison officials are also reportedly headed to the area over a report of downed power lines.

It’s unclear if service is being disrupted at this time as a result of the downed lines.

4:50 p.m.: A SIGalert has been issued, blocking traffic in the #4 and 5 lanes until further notice. It is unknown if any other lanes will need to be shut down at this time.

The fire is moving in light to medium fuel with light winds, according to officials.

4:35 p.m.: Fire officials confirmed a second alarm brush response was called in for the fire.

At least one inmate firefighter was injured battling the blaze according to preliminary reports, fire officials confirmed.

The fire began on the northbound side of the freeway, but has currently jumped the 5 and is now on the eastern side of the freeway, moving closer to Castaic Lake.

No update has been released on how many acres the fire has consumed.

4:15 p.m.: The fire has reached 10 acres, said Captain Ron Singleton with the L.A. County Fire Department.

“No containment at this time,” the captain said.

While the fire remains at a first alarm response, suppression efforts are being hampered as of 4:05 p.m. by power lines in the area making it difficult for water drops from the air to be conducted safely.

As of 4:05 p.m. the fire is still growing, and is somewhere between two and three acres.

“It’s up to two acres right now,” said Captain Ron Singleton
