Pico Fire: Forward Progress Stopped, 90 Acres Burned

A brush fired, dubbed the “Pico Fire” by first responders, burned west of Stevenson Ranch Monday, with smoke from the fire visible as far away as Ventura County.

3:18 p.m. – Fire officials have reported a 35 percent containment of the Pico fire.

Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Gustavo Medina said operations would continue throughout the night.

“We are going to be here for several more hours into the night time to increase those containment lines,” he said.

2:31 p.m. – Firefighters are reporting forward progress on the Pico Fire has stopped. The fire burned 90 acres before firefighters were able to stop it. No structures were threatened at any time.

Fire officials confirmed that all LAFD aircraft called in to fight the blaze were being released from the incident.

2:15 p.m. – Fire officials have confirmed the Pico Fire has grown to 50-75 acres. More than 200 firefighters are battling the blaze in 106-degree heat.

Fire officials have not called for any evacuations in the Stevenson Ranch area.

2:05 p.m. – The Pico Fire has grown to 25 acres, and fire officials have called a third alarm brush response. The third alarm response is due to the weather conditions, which put additional stress on the firefighters and require relief teams to replace crews in the field.

No structures are threatened at the moment, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department officials.

1:54 p.m. – Firefighters are now reporting the Pico Fire has grown to 10 acres and is still spreading. No homes are under evacuation at this time.

The fire is 0 percent contained. Fixed wing aircraft are on their way to drop flame retardant on the front flank of the fire.

1:26 p.m. – A monitoring station for the National Weather Service near the fire is reporting 106-degree temperatures in the area with winds of 7 mph and gusts up to 15 mph out of the west. Humidity is at 19 percent.

The fire is burning in the unincorporated Santa Susana Mountains area.

The California Highway Patrol is working with Sheriff’s officials on traffic control near Poe Parkway and Brooks Circle in Stevenson Ranch. No structures are currently threatened and no homes have been evacuated.

“The fire has the potential to reach 100 acres,” said Marvin Limb, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Units on scene requested a second alarm brush fire response at 1:17 p.m. Firefighters from Los Angeles City Fire are assisting the firefighting effort.

1:11 p.m. – The Pico Fire, which originated near 26385 W. Pico Canyon Rd. in Stevenson Ranch, had reportedly burned through five acres as of 1:11 p.m. Monday.

While no structures are immediately threatened, it has a moderate rate of spread in a medium brush, and is reportedly burning in an oil field.
