Reade said the public should expect updated statuses on fire acreage and containment by Tuesday morning.

The fire started following a car crash Sunday around 1 p.m., officials said, after a car struck a tree and the sparks from that crash lit the surrounding brush on fire.

The fire quickly grew from a quarter-acre in the brush to 100 acres, before reaching more than 870 acres in size at its peak.

The blaze left some residents concerned over the abundance of brush on the side of Highway 14.

“Seemingly all this stuff starts off the side of the freeway,” said Lane Boyer, a resident near the fire, noting that the cause of 2016’s Sand Fire was also a car crash off the side of Highway 14.

“If you look out your window, it’s not comforting,” he said.

Fire officials said that most evacuations are done out of an abundance of caution, because large fires are often unpredictable.

“The situation is so dynamic it can change on a moment’s notice,” said Greg Hitchcock, captain of Los Angeles County Fire Station 108 in Santa Clarita, adding firefighters prefer residents to evacuate before the flames get anywhere close to their homes in order to ensure the safety of them and the firefighters.

9:32 p.m. UPDATE: Santa Clarita Valley Sheriffs Station officials sent out a notification at 9:15 p.m. Sunday night stating that the Placerita Fire is now at 870 acres but still at 50% containment.

The fire has grown another 50 acres to 850 acres, but no containment has been confirmed.

4:10 p.m.: CHP officials have opened the # 1, 2 and 3 lanes on the northbound 14 freeway. All northbound traffic remains closed. Because of the fire blocking roads, traffic throughout Santa Clarita, especially on the 5 freeway, is backed up.

  1. Oh man, this fire season is gonna be a doozie!!! ????

  2. Looks like it is really close by me ????????????????

  3. Can someone tell me what is the zip code that the fire is affecting?

  4. Once again Sand Canyon becomes an irrational “detour” for those fleeing the 14 – even after 14 re-opened.

  5. I was there! A woman in her early 60’s locked her breaks up and rolled down the embankment. The woman was pulled from her car by one man as another man used a fire extinguisher to put out the grass fire. When I got there I started administrating first aid on the woman shortly after the flames shot out both sides of the car and climbed up the embankment where it jumped Sierra Highway. By then we had moved her away from the car and into some near by shade. My thoughts go out to her, our firefighters and all those affected.
