UPDATE: Rye Fire Scorches Over 5,000 Acres, All Evacuations Lifted #RyeFire

A third alarm has been called for a 5,000-acre brush fire near Rye Canyon as firefighters battle sustained winds of 35 MPH and a growing blaze along the west side of Santa Clarita.

The evacuation center for the Rye Fire is located at the College of the Canyons Valencia Campus. Both previous evacuation centers have been closed and their occupants moved to the college.

6:23 p.m. UPDATE: LACoFD officials have announced that all residents can return to their homes. All evacuations have been lifted in the Santa Clarita Valley. This includes all residents in the Westridge community.

Schools in the William S. Hart Union High School District will resume their regular schedule Wednesday.

5:08 p.m. UPDATE: Sheriff’s officials confirmed Tuesday evening that one structure has been destroyed in the Rye Fire. It is unknown at this time if the structure was a home. No injuries have been reported.

The Large Animals evacuation center at Pierce College is at full capacity and cannot accept any more animals.  Large animal sheltering available at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, located at 2551 W Avenue H, in Lancaster. 

4:40 p.m. UPDATE: The Newhall Library is open again after being shut down during the citywide power outages reported throughout the day.

4 p.m. UPDATE: KHTS reporters on scene at College of the Canyons are reporting a large number of people attempting to pick up their children.

Parents are urged to be patient and listen to any officials.

3:24 p.m. UPDATE: SCVi Charter School is now under mandatory evacuation.

Families can pick up their children from the College of the Canyons football field, located at the Valencia campus.

3:08 p.m. UPDATE: The Rye Fire has grown to 5,000 acres, fire officials confirmed. The fire is now 5 percent contained.

However, as the fire moves west, officials have reopened the westbound lanes of Newhall Ranch Road as well as the Old Road’s northbound lanes. The westbound lanes of State Route 126 are still closed.

2:06 p.m. UPDATE: Both directions of traffic on the 5 freeway are open again, CHP officials confirmed. Heavy traffic is expected along the freeway.

A state of emergency was called for Los Angeles County by the county’s board of supervisors due to the Rye Fire and the Creek Fire burning in Sylmar. Together, they have burned approximately 11,000 acres.

1:50 p.m. UPDATE: All of the Westridge community is being asked to evacuate by Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies.

The evacuation center for the fire has been changed to College of the Canyons Valencia campus. Both previous evacuation centers have been closed and their occupants moved to the college.

1:43 p.m UPDATE: About 1300 homes are being evacuated in the Westridge community, according to the city of Santa Clarita. Approximately 400 firefighters are on scene fighting the Rye Fire.

1:38 p.m. UPDATE: Power is still out for approximately 14,000 Santa Clarita residents.

Residents in Castaic are also reporting phone service in the area is spotty or nonexistent. Service providers have not given a reason for the downed service yet, and have no ETA for restoring phone service.

1:18 p.m. UPDATE: A second evacuation center has been set up by the Red Cross at the Centre, located at 20880 Center Pointe Parkway in Sycamore Room A.

The Rye Fire now at 1,000 acres with 0 percent containment, according to city officials Fire is moving toward Ventura County. Additional Evacuations are in place for Valencia Travel Village, Blacksmith Dr. and Alta Vista.

1:10 p.m. UPDATE: The Antelope Valley Line through Santa Clarita remains open, but is expriencing delays due to speed restrictions and a large number of passengers. Delays of up to 45 minutes are expected.

12:40 p.m. UPDATE: Mandatory evacuations are in place for all of West Ranch. Students at West Ranch HS, Rancho Pico Jr. High and Oak Hills Elementary are being bussed to College of the Canyons.

All residents near the schools are being asked to leave the area.

Additionally, the Valencia Travel Village trailer park is under mandatory evacuation.

Officials confirmed shortly before 12:40 p.m. the fire had jumped the freeway, and was continuing to spread with 0 percent containment.

12:30 p.m. UPDATE: Several schools are being evacuating ahead of #RyeFire including Rancho Pico, West Ranch and Oak Hills. Any residents around the schools are being asked to leave as well

The evacuation center for the Rye Fire is located at Valencia High School at 27801 Dickason Dr., in the multipurpose room.

Students are still on campus, and classes are continuing as normal for the day, so parking may be limited at the school.

The Old Road has been shut down in both directions at Valencia Blvd.

All residents in Santa Clarita are encouraged to stay indoors to avoid inhaling smoke and to stay off of the roads as much as possible to make room for emergency vehicles.

At least 13,000 residents are still without power throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. No update is available for when power is expected to be restored.

11:39 a.m. UPDATE: The Rye Fire has grown to at least 500 acres, officials confirmed.

No additional evacuations or structures threatened have been reported.

College of the Canyons is still open at both campuses, and no classes have been cancelled.

11:32 a.m. UPDATE: A second fire has broken out in Newhall, near the 14 freeway.

The quarter-acre blaze was reportedly caused by downed power lines in the area.

Firefighters are still on-scene working to quickly extinquish the blaze and return to the Rye Fire.

11:25 a.m. UPDATE: aproximately 10,000 people are without power due to outages caused by damaged power lines caught in the Rye Fire. No estimate from Southern California Edison as to when power will be restored is available.

The fire is still officially at 200 acres, although high winds may have increased the spread of flames since the last official update.

11 a.m. UPDATE: The evacuation center for the Rye Fire is located at Valencia High School at 27801 Dickason Dr.

A command post has been set up in the parking lot of Smart and Final and LA Fitness. Oakmont Senior Center has not been evacuated as of yet.

However, power outages are impacting traffic signals, so drivers are urged to use extreme caution.

The Boston Scientific building is Saugus has been evcuated ahead of the Rye Fire, according to the city of Santa Clarita.

At least five schools, Mountainview, West Creek, Valencia, Rio Norte and Trinity Academy, are without power, but not evacuated.

COC officials have not closed the Valencia campus or cancelled any classes as of 11 a.m.

10:45 a.m. UPDATE: The Rye Fire has burned at least 200 acres, officials said.

No evacuations have been called as of 10:45 a.m.

Approximately 1,700 people on the west side of the Santa Clarita Valley are experiencing power outages due to the fire. Smaller outages are being reported throughout the valley.

10:32 a.m. Witnesses are reporting the evacuation of Oakmont of Santa Clarita and Walmart on Kelly Johnson Parkway.

A third alarm has been called for the fire. Officials have not given a new estimate for the fire’s size, but believe it has grown significantly since the last update.

10:20 a.m. UPDATE: The northbound 5 freeway has been shut down at the 126 until further notice. The on-ramp at Magic Mountain Parkway has been closed as well.

Winds of up to 36 MPH are blowing the fire in a southwestern direction, towards the 5 freeway.

10:10 a.m. UPDATE: A second alarm response has been called for the Rye Fire, officials said. Over 200 firefighters are now responding to the blaze.

“25 acres and running,” said Maria Grycan, a spokeswoman for LACoFD. “No structures threatened.”

No evacuations have been called, but some businesses in the area are sending employees home as a precautionary measure.

10 a.m. UPDATE: Officials with the city of Santa Clarita confirmed the fire had grown to 20 acres.

Flames were spotted near homes, but officials have not declared any structures threatened or called for evacuations.

9:54 a.m. UPDATE: Smoke was showing from several miles away shortly before 9:45 a.m., fire officials said.
