A Santa Clarita Burrtec garbage truck reportedly caught fire around 4 p.m. Monday, but was quickly put out with no injuries reported.

A Burrtec Waste Services garbage truck reportedly caught fire and had to pull over in the parking lot of 21000 Centre Pointe Parkway on Golden Valley Road to dump their load to allow the fire to be extinguished Monday, officials said. 

At around 4:01 p.m. Monday, a call went out for a vehicle fire involving a Burrtec garbage truck. The fire was able to be put out in roughly nine minutes with no reported spread, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD).

Vehicle fires involving garbage trucks are typically caused by disposed items that are still smoldering, according to LACoFD officials. Common procedure has the garbage trucks safely dump their load in an empty lot and allow firefighters to extinguish any flames and avoid potential vehicle damage or spread to surrounding areas.

LACoFD cautions Santa Clarita residents to avoid the disposal of garbage that is still smoldering and/or a potential fire hazard to allow waste services such as Burrtec or Waste Management to execute a safe pickup.
