Deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station detained a person of interest, however, after a brief investigation they realized the person was not the arsonist and are continuing their investigation.

“We are treating these two fires as a possible arson,” said Lt. Hahnlein, with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Initially, fire officials received reports of a commercial building fire at approximately 10:13 p.m. near Lyons Avenue and Apple Street.

When they arrived on scene, they discovered that a nearby dumpster had caught fire.

“It was a dumpster fire which they thought had spread to a strip mall,” said Jeremy Staffor, Dispatch Supervisor with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. “The fire did not spread to the structure.”

The first dumpster fire was knocked down less than 20 minutes later. No injuries were reported, and the only structure to sustained any damage was a small shed adjacent to one of the nearby businesses.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
