Sheriff’s Department Bus Catches On Fire In Newhall Pass, Inmates Evacuated

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) bus has caught fire in the Newhall Pass Wednesday afternoon, prompting the evacuation of inmates on board, officials said.

The vehicle fire was first reported at about 3:35 p.m. Wednesday on the northbound 5 Freeway south of Calgrove Boulevard, according to Franklin Lopez with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“It came in as a Sheriff’s bus on fire,” Lopez said.

Upon arrival, the fire was extinguished, according to Lopez.

An estimated 15 inmates were evacuated from the bus, according to Fire officials.

No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident, Lopez added

Traffic on the northbound 5 Freeway is impacted through the Newhall Pass, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

A SigAlert was issued at about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday for the No. 1 lane on the northbound I-5, closed south of Calgrove Boulevard for about one hour, according to CHP logs.

  1. Defunding the police was a great idea. Maintaining equipment and vehicles will be the first area to be hit by massive budget cuts. We will see more vehicles breaking down and older (less reliable) vehicles since funds are “reallocated”.

    When are we going to see the reallocated funds improve the community?

  2. Glad the criminals didn’t escape, but what difference does it make really when we got Gasgon who wants to empty half of the jail population back on our streets! Gotta DUMP this BOZO!
