“A lot of folks are calling here, thinking the fire is moving this way,” said Capt. Bob Goldman with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. “The fire is not coming this way. They’re in no danger.”

Residents, especially in the Valencia area, are reporting hazy skies and the smell of smoke on the air.

The smoke is being attributed to the Thomas Fire, which has burned more than 252,500 acres in 11 days across Ventura County.

“The fire’s quite a ways away,” Goldman said.

The Thomas Fire has caused evacuations throughout Ventura County, including orders in Fillmore, about 25 miles from Santa Clarita.

The mandatory evacuations announced Thursday morning include: Hall Road to the west, Sespe Creek to the east, the Los Padres National Forest boundary to the north, and the Fillmore City limits to the south, said Ventura County Sheriff’s officials.

The Thomas Fire is now considered the fourth biggest fire in California history, as the blaze continues to be fueled by record-setting Santa Ana winds.

Residents in Santa Clarita should expect a calm weekend, but should watch out for low air quality throughout the Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valleys.

“If there’s any change in the conditions or any reason for them to be concerned,” Goldman said, “there will be fire department and sheriff’s personnel making them aware.”
