KHTS already keeps Santa Clarita informed over its airwaves, website and through its free daily news emails. Now, while things are calm, it’s the perfect time to prepare for emergencies, especially if it involves evacuations. The Los Angeles County Fire department recommends using the simple “Ready, Set, Go” plan to help you prepare for wildfires.
Ready: Create a Defensible Space. A defensible space is the area around a structure free of flammable plants and objects that creates a zone in which firefighters can operate safely in order to protect a home during a wildfire. This space is wide enough to prevent direct flame impingement and reduce the amount of radiant heat reaching the structure.
Set: Prepare your family by creating a disaster plan that includes meeting locations and communication plans. Exercise your disaster plan regularly so that your family is familiar with it and knows what to do. Keep a pair of old shoes and a flashlight handy for a night evacuation.
Keep the six “P’s” ready, in case an immediate evacuation is required:
- People and pets
- Papers, phone numbers, and important documents
- Prescriptions, vitamins, and eyeglasses
- Pictures and irreplaceable memorabilia
- Personal computers (information on hard drive and disks)
- “Plastic” (credit cards, ATM cards) and cash
Go: By leaving early, you will give your family the best chance of surviving a wildfire. You also help firefighters by keeping roads clear of congestion, enabling them to move more freely and do their jobs.
