SCV Homes For Heroes Recognized By County Supervisors

H4HSupestwoLos Angeles County Supervisors recognized KHTS AM 1220 and other sponsors of the SCV Homes for Heroes program, providing support for the kickoff of the project administered by Habitat For Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley chapter.

The “Brush For Kindness” first public event will happen November 5, when volunteers will help a local veteran rehabilitate their home in Saugus. Read more about that effort here.

The Supervisors presented KHTS co-owner Carl Goldman and representatives from the Gas Company, Home Depot and Habitat with a proclamation this morning during their regular meeting.

H4HSupesoneThe text of the proclamation follows:

Whereas November 11 is the national observance of Veteran’s Day, when we honor the men and woman who have served in our military, the families who support them and the military heroes no longer with us, and those who have risked and given their lives to preserve the liberty of our nation and its citizens, and

Whereas recent census data shows the Santa Clarita Valley’s veteran population is well over 10,000; other reports confirm that the SCV is home to a disproportionately high number of vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, our returning vets are in need of critical home repairs and modifications, having sacrificed earlier educational and employment opportunities in order to serve the country or having become service-disabled, they are returning to poor living conditions; and

Whereas Habitat for Humanity, San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys, with its model of providing affordable housing and connecting families to services that promote education and self-sufficiency, is uniquely positioned to help meeting this growing need, and to help empower veterans; and

Whereas the Habitat affiliate serving the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys is working with local community and elected leaders, as well as concerned businesses like KHTS AM 1220, Southern California Gas Company, Home Depot and others, to launch Habitat’s new “SCV Homes For Heroes” campaign.

Therefore, on behalf of the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles, I, Michael D. Antonovich, Mayor, support the goal to build new homes for vets under the Habitat model, and recognize November 5-12, 2011 as “SCV Homes For Heroes” week.
