Santa Clarita residents are invited to celebrate the new year in a brisk, but potentially chilling way Jan 1.
The Santa Clarita Aquatic Center is hosting the seventh annual Glacier Slide Polar Bear Swim, opening the typically closed outdoor pool and slide to the public, said Heather Sumagaysay, communications specialist for Santa Clarita.
“What makes it special is the new year, it’s like taking a dive in new waters, which is a chilly thing to do,” Sumagaysay said.
In past years, participants paid a small cost. This year, it will be free thanks to the city, she said.
“It’s an annual tradition and a safe way for the community to come out,” Samagaysay said. “And after taking that very chilly plunge (participants) can enjoy heaters, hot chocolate and snacks.”
The Aquatic Center water slide pool is only open during the summer, so this is your last chance to take a dive until after memorial day, she said.
Upwards of 80 participants typically come to the event which begins at 9 a.m. and lasts about an hour.
The center is located at 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway.
