Four karate champions from the Santa Clarita Valley were honored at Tuesday’s City Council meeting for their performance at an international contact karate tournament in Canada, city officials announced Wednesday.
Shannon Laurin, Cassie Greenough, John Michael Laurin and Gabriel Harries all helped take home medals for the U.S. in a prestigious competition against teams from Russia, Japan and Canada.

The tournament, which was hosted in St-Jerome, Canada, in May, featured more than 400 karatekas competing in both team and individual events.

The U.S. women’s team, which included Shannon Laurin and Greenough, took home the gold medal. The U.S. men’s team, which included John Michael Laurin and Harries, won the silver medal.
In the individual events, John Michael Laurin competed in the men’s division against an undefeated Russian champion and won the gold medal. His sister, Shannon Laurin, also won the gold medal in the women’s division.
In the weapon form division, Shannon Laurin received the gold while John Michael Laurin got the silver. In the kata division, Greenough won the gold and Shannon Laurin got the bronze.
