The 2014 concert features work by tap dance phenomenon and 2014 Alpert Award-Winner Michelle Dorrance, along with two world premieres by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago created by CalArts alumnus Jonathan Fredrickson, and faculty Laurence Blake, according to a news release.

Acclaimed guest artist Michelle Dorrance will round out the evening with her groundbreaking contemporary interpretation of tap dance.”
The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at California Institute of the Arts, CalArts, presents its annual holiday evening of dance featuring work by faculty members and acclaimed guest artists, according to the news release. Performances are on Dec. 4 and 5 at the Walt Disney Modular Theater on the CalArts campus, and Dec. 12 and 13, at REDCAT, Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater, in downtown Los Angeles.
The New Yorker called Dorrance, “one of the most imaginative tap choreographers working today.” For the Winter Dance Concert, she integrates tap dance, body rhythm, and live musicians in SOUNDspace, according to a news release. This composition for 11 CalArts dancers adapts a work she originally created for Dorrance Dance of which she is founder and artistic director.
Internationally renowned as a dancer, choreographer and teacher, Dorrance is the recipient of a 2012 Princess Grace Award, a 2012 Field Dance Fund Award and a 2011 Bessie Award.
Fredrickson was named one of Dance magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2011, according to a news release.
His new work for the Winter Dance Concert, Open Forum, delineates movement for a trio of CalArts dancers. Prior to joining Hubbard Street,Fredrickson was a principal dancer with the Limon Dance Company for whom he created two new works, according to a news release. He won Hubbard Street’s National Choreographic Competition and joined the company in February 2011.
“My work is best described as action painting or perhaps action etching or carving. I am interested in using the body as an instrument that folds in and out of movement to carve and define space, creating a painting of movement, sound and light with an undercurrent of narrative,” said Blake. He was a 2014 recipient of the inaugural Evelyn Sharp/CalArts Summer Choreographic Residency.
