Decorating With Stripes

By Tami Smight, ASID

I just love adding a stripe to my designs. Stripes add an exciting energy to a space. The visual interest of a striped fabric or rug can be a Tami Smight Interiorsplayful contrast to florals, plaids or solids.

Striking the right balance with stripes requires some know-how! Read on to follow some designer tips for working stripes into your room design.

Keep your stripes in the same overall color palette of the room. The only exception would be black/white stripes. They are a great neutral and will work well with any color scheme in a room.

If you want to add stripes to the wall, it doesn’t have to a labor-intensive paint job with taping off stripes etc. Consider adding a bold, striped silk drapery at the window. The vertical element of the drapery panels will instantly lift the eye and visually expand the room, the added benefit of the stripe fabric will lead the eye up and create even more space visually.
Be mindful of the pattern set with stripes. If you decide to do an up/down, vertical stripe on a drapery, then maintain that pattern elsewhere in a pillow or rug.
