“I’m a DIY guy myself, I love the do-it-yourselfs and I will forever educate and forever assist anybody attempting to get rid of their own problem,” said Cardon Ellis of Unipest. “Here’s the big thing right now: ants are blowing up.”

While a lot of what Ellis called the “gimmicks” posted online about getting rid of ants in your house don’t tend to work — like feeding them cornmeal — the first DIY step Ellis recommended is to wash down the area with ammonia or regular soap and water.

“That will eliminate the pheromone trail that they use to communicate with each other and to make it back to the hive,” Ellis said, “and ideally that will actually make it so they don’t invade the rest of your structure.”

The next DIY step is to find their source of water — which Ellis noted the majority of the time comes back to a leaking sprinkler system, — and eliminate it.

“Ninety percent of the time if you go around your sprinkler system, you will realize one of the heads is busted, one of the pipes is cracked, one of the small risers has a hairline fracture and it’s leaking tons of water,” Ellis said.

Because dry desert populations of ants commonly found in places like Santa Clarita are typically used to about one drop of water per week, giving them a sudden slow trickle of hundreds of thousands of water drops from a leak is like paradise, according to Ellis.

“I have done big jobs, emergency jobs for restaurants where health departments were getting on them and so on and so forth,” Ellis said, “where some $500 restaurant job was traced back to a 50-cent plastic PVC part.”
