In your dining room, consider centering the furniture over the rug and mimic the shape of the table. So a rectangular dining set will ideally have a rectangular rug. The size of the rug will be dictated by the perimeter of the chairs pulled out from

the table (as in guests entering/exiting a chair). Too small a rug will make the room look small and pinched. Too large a rug will cause people to trip.

 

Over a bare wood floor in a bedroom, a rug will add warmth and bare foot coziness. The architecture of the bed and the overall dimensions of the room, along with other furnishings will guide you in selecting the correct size rug. If you like the idea of rug

underfoot when getting out of bed, purchase a rectangular rug with overhang on the sides of the bed.

If you like to use the foot of your bed as a space to sit on the floor to relax, exercise or watch TV, choose a rug placed with a four to five foot overhang at the foot of the bed.

When selecting the pattern for a rug, take your cue from the colors/pattern s in the room. Bold patterns will make a rug appear larger, but you may not want to cover the design with furniture. If you are placing furniture over a rug, avoid a center

medallion with a radiating design, you want to see the design from everywhere in the room.
