With what are known as “roof rats” common in the Santa Clarita Valley during rainy and cold weather, Owner Cardon Ellis made a video entitled “How to Set a Rat Trap Like a Professional.”
“All the time I get calls from customers that have been overrun (with rats) once it starts raining,” said Ellis. “I’ll go out, and they actually have purchased maybe the correct traps, or at least my favorite brand of traps, and they attempt it for awhile, but they’ve just done it incorrectly so they haven’t gotten results.”

Ellis recommends regular Victor rat traps that typically cost about $1 each, but noted that simply adding bait and laying them out isn’t enough — it’s “a whole process.”
“People forget rats are neophobic, which means they are afraid of new things,” Ellis explained. “So you need to acclimate them to the traps. They need to be accustomed to them first before you all of a sudden start trying to actually snap them to death.”
To a rat, a bait-filled trap can be compared to a strange package arriving at your house with 10 pounds of free beef jerky inside, according to Ellis.
“You may love beef jerky, but the fact that it was just presented in your lap by this unknown source — would you just dive in?” he said. “No. You’d be suspicious of it.”
