Santa Clarita pest control expert Cardon Ellis of Unipest is talking about the process of “tenting” a house known as fumigation, and when it’s necessary for residents.

Fumigation is used to exterminate termites or bed bugs, and Ellis noted is only really necessary when the situation has become severe or there are areas that cannot be accessed with alternative methods like orange oil.
“We specialize in organic and eco-friendly methods of doing pest control or classic ‘extermination,’ but sometimes just in the interest of structural integrity, if it is termites in the house, that’s when you have to tent,” Ellis explained. “(And) sometimes there’s just areas we can’t access so it makes more sense just to tent the house.”

In the case that fumigation is needed, Ellis noted there is no need to panic or clean the entire house from top to bottom afterward.
“People get a little bit freaked out,” he said. “Sometimes they ask me, ‘Oh is it safe? Oh can I go in my house afterwards? Oh do I have to wash everything?’”
The analogy Ellis uses — though a bit morbid, he admitted — is to imagine covering a house with saran wrap with people inside and pumping carbon dioxide in. First, he noted the people would fall asleep, and then they would die because they can’t respirate carbon dioxide.
However, once the restrictive saran wrap is removed and all the doors and windows are opened so the carbon dioxide can escape, the house becomes perfectly safe once again.
“Nothing would keep me from going in your house and from using your plates, drinking out of your cups, sleeping in your bed sheets, wearing your coat — because carbon dioxide comes and goes without leaving a residual,” Ellis explained. “It’s not a dust, it’s not a vapor, it’s not a mist. There’s nothing residual about it.”
Ellis continued that the Vikane gas used during fumigation is “the exact same thing,” describing it as a “stable, inert gas that just comes and goes without leaving a residual.”
Vikane gas can typically permeate the walls and entire structure of a house within six hours, killing all the termites or bed bugs inside, and once the tent is removed and the aeration process is complete, residents can simply go home and resume their lives, according to Ellis.
“Fumigations are an amazing, amazing process,” he said. “There is a time and a place for it.”
