The Do’s And Dont’s Of Fine Furniture

fine_furniture_picKeeping yourself cool this summer in the Santa Clarita valley is one thing, but protecting your treasured furniture from the sweltering heat, is a whole different story.

Fine wood furniture in any home is an important possession to preserve and if cared for properly, can last for generations. Sunlight and heat over time, can damage virtually anything in its path, like couches, table cloths, curtains, carpet and especially wood. In a natural state, wood contains a staggering amount of moisture and preserving appropriate levels of moisture is the key to the preservation of fine wood.

The first thing you Do want to do when it comes to your furniture is position it away from heating vents, fireplaces and radiators. You Don’t want to store your fine wood furniture in attics where temperature and humidity levels vary widely from summer to winter and day to night. Also, you Do want to avoid placing furniture in the direct sunlight which can dramatically fade furniture. Use drapes, sheers or protective window film to protect against the suns harmful rays.

In terms of maintaining the luster of your fine wood furniture, it’s imperative to know the safest methods to preserving your priceless possessions. The hustle and bustle of everyday life can be harsh on wood furniture. Most importantly, the moisture from a sweating beverage glass can leave round rings on the wood finish and heat from a hot dish of food can tarnish the wood finish beneath. A quick and easy solution to this issue is to provide cork- or felt bottom coasters for any beverage glass. Place mats, table cloths or padded table covers to protect dining room tables from spills and scrapes.

On top of preserving your fine wood furniture from damage, you can safely keep it clean without worry. To remove greasy soil, or the film from cigarette smoke, mix a solution of oil soap and water as instructed on the oil soap package. Use a natural sponge, moisten it with oil soap and wring out most of the water and gently stroke the furniture to loosen the soil. Then, rinse the residue off with another damp clean sponge and dry with fresh cleaning cloths.

When you want to dust the furniture, it’s best to use lambs wool, or a barely damp white cotton cleaning cloth. Micro fiber cloths do a great job of attracting and removing fine- blown in soil. You Don’t want to use a feather duster because a broken quill can scratch and damage the finish. Also, wax and polish are suitable for fine furniture.
