Cardon Ellis, who runs the Santa Clarita pest control company alongside his father, noted that bees can be very dangerous, particularly in swarms around children or the elderly who have trouble escaping.

“People don’t realize that bees are one of the most dangerous animals in North America,” Ellis said, noting that their stings kill more often than people think.

When it comes to bee hive removal in Santa Clarita, Unipest will attempt what’s called a “live removal” whenever possible, but sometimes Unipest staff have no choice but to exterminate a hive.

“Sometimes you have to, and usually that’s in emergency situations, like obviously if it’s next to a school or a playground, something like that,” Ellis said.

While Ellis encouraged any residents in need of bee hive removal in Santa Clarita to contact Unipest to find out more, he added that if an individual is ever attacked by bees, the appropriate response is to run more than 100 yards from the hive.

“They only really have a certain territory that they feel they have to protect around their nest, and once you’ve exited that territory successfully, they pretty much do leave you alone,” he said. “So if you ever do find yourself getting swarmed, all you really have to do is run 100 yards pretty much in any direction.”

Rising summer temperatures in Santa Clarita also usually brings crane flies, which Ellis clarified are not the “mosquito eaters” many people think they are.

“They don’t eat other mosquitoes. They feed off of pollen and water and other organic stuff,” he said. “They’re harmless … (but) you can call us. We’ve got measures that can be taken so you don’t get as many.”
