“Right now we’re in the middle of swarm season,” said Cardon Ellis of Unipest. “People don’t realize this, but there’s a huge difference between a bee hive and a bee swarm.”

Much like the phrase, “two is company, three is a crowd,” Ellis noted that 2,000 bees in a hive are company, and 3,000 are a crowd.

“Once a bee hive reaches that proverbial 3,000 mark, they actually split, kind of like a cell divides,” he explained. “Then one half creates its own new queen and it’s got all of its workers, and it goes off to try to find a new home.”

Now a swarm, the homeless bees will suddenly land on the side of the wall of a house, or under the home’s eaves, forming a basketball-sized clump that often sends the residents into a panic.

Because they haven’t yet established a new territory, a bee swarm is actually much less aggressive toward people and animals than they would be if they were protecting a hive, according to Ellis.

“The truth is, they’re just trying to find a new home,” he said, noting that a resident can pay to have an exterminator or bee hive removal person come to their home, but because it’s a swarm and not an actual hive, all they can do is vacuum up the bees and release them elsewhere.

“I’m going to save a bunch of people a ton of money right now,” Ellis continued. “You can call an exterminator or a bee hive removal person and freak out and lose $200 … or you can just wait 24 hours. They usually leave on their own and they’re harmless.”

Ellis advised simply avoiding the area while the bees realize it isn’t a good place to build a hive.

“On the side of a wall, they’re not going to be able to draw honey or comb, and usually they’re trying to find a water source nearby,” Ellis said. “It’s not a problem if you just kind of avoid them for a little bit — you’ll be okay.”

  1. We just had a bunch coming in our bathroom vent. They were coming into the bathroom from there. I googled it and found if you put peppermint oil and cinnamon they don’t like it…so we stuffed wet papertowels with peppermint oil and cinnamon into the vent. They all flew away and didn’t come back. 🙂

  2. Thank you for posting this UniPest. I hope people aren’t having bees exterminated anyway. Bees are in trouble everywhere and we need them to pollinate our gardens and flowers.

  3. Hi waterwatcher,

    Glad you liked it!
