Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire, Is Your Smoke Detector Ready?

Smoke Detector With FireWith the fire season in full force, is your home ready to detect a fire? Smoke detectors are crucial to protect you and your family from fire danger.

Testing smoke detectors along with their placement in your home are also very important when it comes to efficiency and protection. Every city has specific regulations regarding detectors but generally, they should be located throughout your home in “every room with a closet,” says Mike Derderian, President of Valencia Electric.

Examples would be in bedrooms, living rooms and near bathrooms. Detectors in a bedroom should be placed on the ceiling or a wall near the door. Areas of your home that smoke detectors should not be placed in are the kitchen or bathroom to prevent false alarms.

All smoke detectors should be interconnected so everyone is alerted in case of a fire, no matter where they are in the house. To make sure your smoke detectors are connected and working you can test them by pressing the test button on one of the detectors.

All detectors should make a short “beep beep beep” noise to signal if they are interconnected and if the batteries are working. When one or two detectors go off with the short beep noise at any other time, that usually signals that the batteries are low and need to be changed.

It is suggested by professionals, like Mike Derderian, that you check your detector batteries every time change. This way you are sure to have safe functional smoke detectors that are being checked twice a year.
