A facelift for your room may sound like an expensive, exhausting project. I suggest that it is easier than it sounds. Rather than hire professional help, try being your own decorator and give your space an updated look with fresh paint, new fabrics and some added treasures.
All this can be accomplished over a weekend if you are focused and motivated.
Before you begin your room Facelift, cull through websites (I suggest Houzz.com or Pinterest and flag photos of rooms that inspire you. Create a file of these rooms. You will see a pattern of design style emerge from your photos. This is your design personality! Pick up a paint fan deck from your local paint store. Select a new paint color for your room.
Step One: Set a plan. Tackle one room ONLY. This will ensure that you will accomplish your goal and avoid frustration and being overwhelmed. Take a picture of the room. With your inspiration photos as your guide, EDIT, EDIT, EDIT – this is where you decide what stays and what must go. If a piece of furniture, accessory of pillow does not work with your design inspiration, it is time to part with it.
Paint the room in your newly selected color. Step back and see how much the space has already changed!
Step Two: With your room newly painted, and furnishings edited down considerably, you are left with the pieces you love and express your design personality. Step two may be as simple as re-staging the furniture you currently have in the space, along with a few new pieces.
Identify what you need and go to the internet to shop your favorite online sources such as WestElm.com or Pottery Barn.com. Perhaps you have a consignment or resale furniture store in your region – shop for your specific items that are needed, nothing more!
Step Three: Add the finishing touches to pull the room together. Could be you need some new accent pillows, a throw rug or a table lamp. Have fun finding bargains at Homegoods or TJ Max. Arm yourself with a list of must have items, and avoid impulse buys, only purchase what is on the list.
Any design project, big or small, can be overwhelming without professional guidance.
