Himachal Pradesh, IndiaIn October 2014, several junior high and high school students will join facilitators from SCVi and officials with SCVIP on a “Best of the West and Best of the East” exchange trip to India.

SCVIP partners with Pinegrove School in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India, ranked one of the country’s top ten schools.

The local connection to Pinegrove School was established by SCVIP founding member, Bob Geiman, who spent three months in 2003 consulting with a school in northern India. In the process, Geiman became acquainted with Capt. A.J. Singh, headmaster of Pinegrove.

During two and a half weeks in the country, educators and students will visit the Taj Mahal, Golden Temple, and Red Fort, travel into the foothills of the Himalayas, to the old British summer capital city of Shimla, celebrate Diwali with host families and spend some time on the two campuses of Pinegrove School.

This is the second global trip that SCVi has planned for its students. In 2013, 10 high schoolers travelled to Belize in Central America, where they worked at an orphanage.

Pinegrove SchoolElaine Williamson, facilities project manager at SCVi said that some of those same students have already shown an interest in going to India, because of their experience in Belize.

“They were super excited. They really enjoyed the trip a lot…” she said. “Belize had a huge impact on them.”

SCVi and SCVIP are looking for 25 to 30 people to go to India, though they are open to expanding the trip if there is an overwhelming response.

All Santa Clarita Valley students and residents are welcome, but space is limited. Elementary school students must be accompanied by a parent.

The cost is approximately $2800 per person.
