SCVi Charter School To Celebrate 1 Year For The Cafe

A one-of-a-kind program is offering a unique experience for the learners at The Café at Santa Clarita Valley International, and it’s celebrating one year of operation Tuesday, said Chef Dawn Walker, director of food services for the tuition free charter school in Castaic.

“The biggest thing about it is that we’re doing food service for this schools,” Walker said. “We make 70 percent of our food from scratch.”

The Cafe, which already has served thousands of meals with it’s staff of 11, including four chefs, lives up to the school’s name, with a menu that reflects a multicultural influence, such as Korean beef, posole and jambalaya.

In order to do this, The Café purchases $300 to $500 of fresh fruit and vegetables weekly.

“Our learners also suggest menu items, and we offer what they want,” Walker said. “Next week, for example, we are serving clam chowder in bread bowls, a recommendation from one of our 11th-grade learners.”

Everyone at the school’s eatery is offered the same menu, said Walker, who’s worked with the school for more than six years, and has three daughters who attend.

Walker began working with the school through its health and wellness program, while The Cafe was developed on a budget of approximately $50,000.

“As a testament to the quality of the food we offer, 30 percent of our staff eat in The Café with the learners daily, and even enjoy the same meals that our learners eat,” Walker said. “I think we’re awesome and no one is doing what we’re doing — offering homemade meals for really, really cheap.”

There’s a meal assistance program in place for students who can’t afford the lunches, which are priced at $3 for learners and $4 for adults.

The school’s cafe is also able to cater to specific needs, such as a vegan diet or students who don’t eat glutens, she said.

SCVi is located at 28060 Hasley Canyon Road, Suite 200, in the Hasley Canyon Commerce Center in Castaic.

The phone number is (661) 705-4820.
