Yesterday, State Senator George Runner (R-Antelope Valley), Senator Gloria Romero (D-Los Angeles) and Assemblymember Greg Aghazarian joined Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger when he announced the Administration’s prison reform package.
“The Legislature can no longer delay. We must work together to move forward and enact a plan to solve this problem. The number one priority is to protect Californians’ safety. We will not allow dangerous felons to be released into our communities when they should be in prison.”
“I commend the Governor’s commitment to build more prisons and jails. Justice demands that criminals serve their full sentence – to release these criminals early does a huge injustice to the victims and their families who have already suffered.”
“Crime rates are creeping up and California has a high recidivism rate – we need to make sure that criminals know that if they commit a crime they will not get a slap on the wrist but will serve a full sentence.”
“Whenever Californians have been given a choice, they have chosen to increase sentences.”
“As we work together on a prison plan, we must remember the victims and their families. The least we can do is to ensure that justice is served.”
“I also believe that we must provide the necessary resources to adequately staff our prisons and to increase the number of parole and probation officers. To fully protect the public, we must have enough officers maintain control in prisons. We must increase the number of parole and probation officers – they are essential to preserving our public safety as they are required to supervise and monitor convicted criminals.”
“We look forward to working with the Governor and the Democrats for a prison plan that prioritizes public safety.”
