Senator Runner Reports On Budget Votes

georgerunnerThe Senate voted on two budget proposals today: One presented by the Republicans and the other by the Democrats. Both failed (Republican plan: 12-24; Democrat plan: 21-14).

Sen. George Runner (R- Antelope Valley) released the following statements and video clips on the budget debate:

“The Republican budget plan is crafted based on a conservative projection of California’s revenue stream. It’s balanced with no tax increases and a prudent reserve of $900 million. It’s a tough budget. But it’s the same difficult decisions families and businesses are having to make.” (Please see video clip here).

“The reality is California must get people back to work – that’s what will solve our budget problem.” (Please see video clip here).

“Let’s look at overall spending in California: When you consider the federal dollars and the special fund dollars, the fact is this budget is 7 percent larger than the budget two years ago – in terms of total dollars.” (Please see video clip here).

On the Democrat budget plan:

“Their ‘tax reform’ equals middle class tax hikes – and that’s not our definition. That was the definition by the non-partisan Legislative Aanalyst Office.” (Please see video clip here).

“I guess we can all pull out our competing studies. But it doesn’t take much of a study to go to middle class Americans who are struggling to keep their houses and ask them if they can live on less money because the state of California needs more money to keep their programs going. I don’t need a study to tell me that’s bad.” (Please see video clip here).

On Republican’s prison cut proposal:

“Off the top of my head I can tell you: California has twice as many middle management administrators than Texas does even though we have about the same prison population. There’s real money (to save) there. California spends $200,000 on each juvenile ward. There’s real money (to save) there, too.” (Please see video clip here).
