Senior Center Gets Saucy For 2010 Calendar

Women of a certain age prove they’re anything but ordinary.

If your idea of senior citizens in Santa Clarita involves walkers, doctors’ visits and early bird specials, you’re way off point…and the Senior Center aims to prove it to you.

The local non-profit produced a 2010 calendar showing local senior women doing things you might not expect, like shooting pool, riding motorcycles and posing for a painting.

The idea came after a Senior Center movie night, when “Calendar Girls” was shown. The film was released in 2003 and it details a true story of Yorkshire women who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for Leukemia.

“Everyone enjoyed it so much and it was just so inspirational,” said Robin Clough, recreation and volunteer coordinator for the Senior Center. “After watching it, I thought ‘we have to do this’ because we have so much beauty at the Senior Center.”

The Senior Center sells the calendars for $10.00 each, and all proceeds will benefit the Center’s local programs.

seniorcentercalendar_1Aside from fundraising, Clough hopes that the calendar will go a long way toward changing people’s perceptions of seniors. In a short write up on the back of the calendar, ageism is defined and readers are warned that they may be surprised.

“We hope this calendar will erase all ageist stereotypes and illustrate how older women are strong, independent, fit, fun and sexy,” reads the description. “Our senior women, despite possible physical limitations, are resolved to be the best they can be. This is why our activities at the Senior Center are bursting with those seeking to nurture mind, body and soul.”

So far calendar recipients have been supportive.

“People just love it,” Clough said. “The feedback has been just extraordinary.”

The calendars are also equipped with fun facts, such as when Alka Seltzer was introduced and when the first color T.V. was sold. The calendars will be sold until supplies are exhausted.
