Group collects decorated and filled shoeboxes along with blankets, caps and socks.
If you’ve got an empty shoebox in the house, a local group has a GRAND idea to help you fill it.
The GRANDS organization – it stands for Giving Respect and Nurturing to Deserving Seniors – is launching its “Boxes of Blessings” campaign for seniors in the community.
To participate, the group asks that you decorate shoeboxes and fill them with a variety of Thanksgiving items that seniors would appreciate, such as restaurant and grocery gift cards, puzzle books, pens and pencils, hard candies, a small canned ham, canned tuna or meats, small cans of vegetables, fruit sauce or puddings, teabags or individual coffees, candles, purse-size tissues, cookies or small handmade gift items, such as a key lanyards, potholders or embroidered hankies.
Boxes may be marked “male,” “female” or “either” – be creative, but remember, the lid must close.
Decorated boxes may be dropped off at two locations: the Valencia Auto Spa on Valencia Boulevard near Cinema Drive or at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station on Magic Mountain Parkway at Valencia Boulevard. Boxes will be collected Nov. 1-21. All boxes will be distributed on Nov. 22.
The fun doesn’t stop at Thanksgiving. GRANDS is collecting three specific items for assisted living seniors that will be distributed close to Christmas and Hanukkah: lap or throw-sized blankets, knitted or crocheted caps and slipper socks or warm socks. These items can be delivered to the above locations from Nov. 1 through Dec. 20. All items will be distributed on Dec. 21.
In 2007, GRANDS distributed more than 700 shoeboxes and blankets to very grateful seniors. For more information, including how your group can help distribute these items, call Corinn Miklosovic at 607-2579 or Jan Fear at 299-1551.
