September 11 Observance Planned At Veterans Park, Fire Station

To remember those who died in the September 11 attacks on America, thousands of small American flags will flutter on the grass of Veterans Historical Plaza in Newhall Friday.

As part of an event dubbed on Facebook “2,974 Reasons To Never Forget,” the flags will be planted by members of the Young Republicans Club of SCV, who have chosen the memorial as their first public event.

“We were brainstorming for some way to do something for September 11 and saw nothing on the city calendar,” said club President Brett Walter. “We’ll have people reading the names of the people who died and placing the flags, which will stay up for about 24 hours.”

Walter said that a variety of people will be reading the names, including Santa Clarita Councilwoman Laurie Ender and representatives of local elected officials. The readings will begin at 4 p.m. and continue until 7 p.m. and the public is invited to participate.

The group is also asking for donations from readers, suggesting $10 per person, with all proceeds being donated to the Twin Towers Orphans Fund.

For more information on the event and participation, call Walter at (661) 733-4248.

Other 9/11 observances include a ceremony at 9:50 a.m. at Los Angeles County Fire Station 126, Battalion 6 Headquarters, 26320 Citrus Street (across from the Westfield Valencia Town Center) and the Hometown Heroes breakfast, sponsored by the American Red Cross, at the Hyatt Valencia at 7 a.m. KHTS will cover both morning events; check hometownstation.com for pictures and event stories.
