September 11 Tribute Events Around The City

CNN911scrnAs the nation commemorates the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania, several public events are planned to honor the fallen and their survivors.

 

 

 

10 a.m. Santa Clarita 9/11 Memorial at Historic Veterans Plaza at Market and Walnut Streets in Newhall.

Includes presentation of colors, remarks from elected officials including Assemblyman Cameron Smyth. The names of the 2,976 victims will be read and an American flag will be placed in the ground for each victim. Following the flag ceremony, the American Legion Post 507 will host a fundraising luncheon to benefit the Iraq Star Foundation, which provides reconstructive surgery to American soldiers returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Fifth Annual Red Cross Hometown Heroes Brunch; Santa Clarita Activities Center, 20800 Centre Pointe Parkway

Eleven categories of heroes will be honored: Medical Hero, Youth Hero (through 17), Military Hero, Adult Hero (18-59), Educator Hero, Workplace Hero, Senior Hero (60+), First Responder Hero, Corporate Hero, Youth Sports Hero, Mentor Hero, and Animal Hero.

Since June 2009, the Santa Clarita Valley Red Cross has been accepting nominations from community members for this event. The nomination criteria include prevention of loss of life or property, community impact, leadership or mentoring, and making a lasting impact. Tickets are still available; cost is $50 each, funds raised go towards purchasing disaster supplies such as cots, medical supplies and water for disaster relief containers located at area schools. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Patriotic Prayer Day – Central Park

Hosted by Fresh Fire Intercession Ministries, will feature military salutes, music, speakers and a presentation of the 9/11 tribute float sponsored by retired L.A. County Fireman Jerry Thomsen that will be in the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade.

Free admission; participants should bring picnic lunches and lawn chairs. Each participant will be given a small American flag.

5-9 p.m. – Route 66 9/11 Remembrance Classic Car Show

A special invitation is extended to all veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to participate in this event, which will include a ceremony to honor all military personnel, police officers, firefighters and other first responders. A classic car show will begin at 5 p.m., featuring Star Cars, vehicles from TV and the movies, such as the Batmobile, Herbie, the Back to the Future car, Kitt from Knight Rider, the Rat Patrol jeep and the Get Smart car. Honor ceremony at 8 p.m.. Local SCV dignitaries, including Councilman Bob Kellar, will be in attendance. Wear red, white and blue and bring your lawn chairs.

7-8:30 p.m. 9/11 Tribute At Castaic Sports Complex

Sponsored by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, the tribute is free and open to the public. Activities will include a presentation by L.A. County Firefighter Rick Godinez, who went back to Ground Zero to help after the attacks; the Young Marines Color Guard, music by Voices of Peace and others; a tribute walk around the track and a picnic dinner of hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served.
