Santa Clarita Valley residents will have a chance to meet the new Sheriff’s Station captain Wednesday at Starbucks on Golden Valley Road in Canyon Country.

Capt. Roosevelt Johnson, a longtime Santa Clarita Valley resident, is hosting a series of public outreach meetings called Coffee with the Captain at each “zone” in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s Crime Prevention Unit, which is essentially patrol division of the station, created eight zones for the Santa Clarita Valley. Johnson plans to have these informal meetings welcoming dialogue from residents in all eight zones.

Johnson’s goal for his first 90 days was meeting not only with his more than 240 staff members, but also with to get input from community stakeholders, everyone from resident to superintendents, and other officials.

Johnson was named captain in the beginning of March.

Deputy Jonathan Wilson, who oversees the western Canyon Country zone, or Zone 7, invites residents “to come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee,” in his weekly Nixle crime report.

The gathering is expected to last from 10 a.m. to noon. The Starbucks is located at 26585 Golden Valley Road in Santa Clarita.

Johnson lives in the Santa Clarita Valley with his wife, who’s a lieutenant in the Sheriff’s Department at the Palmdale Station. They have a son who’s attending college in Texas.

In his most recent post before coming back to the Santa Clarita Valley, he was a division aide to Chief Neal Tyler, then former Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Capt. Anthony LaBerge, who was promoted from commander to chief, after leaving his SCV post.

After joining the department in November 1990, he graduated from the academy and quickly became familiar with the Santa Clarita Valley.

His first of many assignments with the Sheriff’s Department was Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, which he started in March 1991.

“I was commuting from Los Angeles for about two weeks, working the graveyard shift — midnight until 8 in the morning,” Johnson said. “I realized it was pretty dangerous driving, making that commute after that shift. About two weeks in, I moved out here.”
