Matrix Institute on Addictions donated $34,000 worth of Narcan to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which will go to “high density” opioid overdose areas.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station will split 502 doses of the drug with stations in Lancaster, Palmdale, Altadena, Crescenta Valley, San Dimas and Temple.

“It will definitely reduce deaths by overdose,” said Bob Sharits, program director for The Way Out Recovery SCV. “It’s extremely effective.”

Opioids act as respiratory depressants, he said, and an overdose causes the body to simply stop breathing.

“Narcan is designed to reverse the effects of opiates,” Sharits said. “So if somebody is in an overdose state or they’ve taken too much of an opioid, if they are given Narcan, it will reverse the effects.”

While Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials did not release how much Narcan they will receive as part of the donation, deputies in the valley were among the first in Los Angeles County to receive training with the life-saving drug.

In August, the station was also among the first to give an injectable version of the drug, called Naloxone, to deputies while they patrol.

The new donation will help ensure deputies, who are often the first responders on the scene, have both the training and tools to “immediately reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, prior to the arrival of fire (or) medical personnel,” according to county documents.
