SCV Sheriff’s Station Deputies Respond To Hundreds Of July Fourth Calls

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies arrested one suspect on felony charges and responded to hundreds of calls for service, including a fire related to illegal fireworks, due to Fourth of July celebrations Friday night, authorities said.

Deputies arrested Jorge Sanchez, 36, late Friday evening in the area of Sierra Highway and Jakes Way in Canyon Country for allegedly throwing a bottle at Los Angeles County Fire Paramedics, according to officials. Illegal fireworks confiscated by SCV deputies Friday night.

The Sheriff’s Department had special teams deployed to respond to calls for service and combat the use of illegal fireworks in Santa Clarita, according to a Sheriff’s Station news release.

“Last night alone, we had 208 calls for service, so it was extremely busy,” said Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station. “And that’s on top of the regular Friday night calls… I believe 208 calls for service specifically related to fireworks is one of the highest numbers we’ve had to date.”

Deputies responded to a total of 32 calls specifically related to illegal fireworks between 9 p.m. Thursday and 3 a.m. Friday, and 208 calls between 9 p.m. Friday and 4 a.m. Saturday.

Illegal fireworks confiscated by SCV deputies Friday night.Approximately 60 pounds of illegal fireworks were confiscated by deputies and delivered to Los Angeles County Fire Station 126 in Valencia for disposal.

Sanchez’s arrest occurred after he reportedly was seen by paramedics standing in the middle of the street and appeared to be intoxicated, according to a Nixle news release.

Sanchez was booked on felony charges at the SCV Sheriff’s Station at 1:36 a.m.

Deputies also responded to a fire in the area of Fourl Road and Wiley Canyon Road in Newhall at 12:35 p.m. on Friday, according to the news release.

The fire, which occurred in an alley, allegedly was started by illegal fireworks.

No one was injured in the fire and it was quickly extinguished by Los Angeles County firefighters, Dubin said.

“Throughout the weekend, if people witness illegal fireworks, they should give the sheriff’s station a call,” he said.
