The donated 2014 Ford E350 will be utilized for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Explorer Program and the Youth Activities League, or YAL, according to Tuesday’s agenda.
The vehicle will be used to assist the YAL program, which has over 350 children registered, with the completion of more than 30 annual field trips.
The field trips include numerous visits to museums and theme parks throughout the Southern California region, and include out-of-county trips to Santa Cruz, San Diego, Yosemite, Reno, Tahoe, Santa Barbara, Oxnard, Kern County, San Luis Obispo and Big Bear.
The vehicle will also be utilized by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Explorer Program, which consists of 35 explorers.
Explorers are between the ages of 15 and 21 and receive training in an academy setting. They also participate in “community affairs and non-hazardous law enforcement activities,” according to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station website.
The program attends three annual explorer competitions, two of which are located outside of Los Angeles County.
The Explorer Program is also responsible for participating in multiple Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sponsored functions, including: the Special Enforcement Bureau’s Mud Run, LASD Chili Cook Off, Polar Plunge, Special Olympics and the Santa Clarita Valley Fourth of July Parade.
The program also provides shuttle services for other Explorer Post sponsored events. The additional vehicle will ensure the program’s continued participation in these events.
