Sheriff’s Combat Door-Kick Burglaries

Certain neighborhoods in Santa Clarita have recently seen a spike in so called door-kick burglaries, which take aim at unoccupied homes during the middle of the day.

Neighborhoods in Fair Oaks Ranch, off Highway 14, and Hasley Hills off Interstate 5, have reported several instances and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies from the Santa Clarita station are involved in an active campaign to bring them to an end.

The burglaries usually occur in the middle of the day, and suspects begin by knocking on a door to see if anyone is home. If a resident does not respond, the suspect will either kick down the door or find another way to gain access to the inside of the home.

According to Sergeant Darren Harris with the LA County Sheriff’s department, deputies have stepped up operations in the affected neighborhoods and have seen success.

“We have made a number of arrests of several burglary suspects over the last two weeks,” he said. “But we are continuing to see different sets of suspects come in and commit these burglaries.”

Recently, key arrests have been made with the help of neighborhood residents. There are many things homeowners can do to help make sure that criminals stay out of their homes, and off of their streets.

“We would tell residents to be aware of their surroundings in their neighborhood, and to call 9-1-1 immediately if they see a person or persons climbing over a fence into the backyard of a neighbor’s residence. And obviously if you see them kicking in a door or going through a window,” Harris said. “And we ask for people to be a good witness.  Get vehicle license plate numbers, and if they cant get that, look for other identifying information about the person or the vehicle.”

Sgt. Harris says that it is important to be vigilant with out being panicked. Sometimes solicitors are confused for would-be burglars because people overlook important details.

“Generally, solicitors are going door to door, looking to contact people, whereas burglars are looking to avoid contact,” he said.

The Sheriff’s department has released a list of helpful hints to help keep your property safe, and you can read that list by clicking here.
