Sheriff’s Cut Overtime To Save Millions

khts_budgetTop brass of the LA County Sheriff’s Department could be answering your call or taking down an accident report.

The County of Los Angeles has asked the Sheriff’s department to cut 9% of its net operating cost of $1.3 billion. One of the solutions is to cut down on overtime.

In the past month, the cuts have saved the department close to $8 million and no deputies were cut from our local station, but there are consequences.

“The positions now have to be back-filled by over 100 executives as well as sergeants and lieutenants,” said Steve Whitmore, assistant to Sheriff Lee Baca. “Instead of working overtime they are taking a day off, they’re swapping days out. It’s a challenge for the department. All the executives have performed at least an eight hour shift and will continue to do so.”

The effect on our local station has not been fully measured and any effect on local response times will not be known for another month.

The cuts are even affecting Sheriff Baca himself. A couple of weeks ago, he went on patrol in East Los Angeles and his next shift will be in the Custody division.

The Sheriff’s goal over the next 12 months is to save $128 million, of which $58 million will be from overtime.
